We used a ‘gallery style’ picture frame to make this 7″x7″ piece of abstract art (center of frame) stand large.

First, we “float” the actual piece of artwork up about 1/4″ inch uniformly off the surface.  We then used a wide, tone-on-tone mat (meaning the mat is the same color as white part of art), and put in a deep, white, high lacquer Larson Juhl frame.  This particular piece is also topped with museum glass, which is not only UV resistant, but also largely eliminates distracting reflections from light fixtures, windows, etc.

Along with the deep frame, the 5-inch wide mat around the image catches the shadow cast by the floated art, creating in essence a shadow box — which we call gallery style framing.  The technique adds an extra impression of depth and dimension.  In addition, this allows placement of small art on larger wall spaces without looking, well, small!
